Chapter Six

December 18, Evening

While Sophie changed and had a quick shower I had time to read some of Max’s book. I could see why he was the head of the creative department. I pictured him regaling a younger Sophie with these stories. Izzy Sunshine was a sort of cross between Mary Poppins and the coolest babysitter you could imagine. In the stories she took Sophie on the craziest adventures while babysitting but always managed to get her back home to her parents in one piece and on time. It was weird thinking that I was the inspiration for this character because if that was how Max saw me I couldn’t imagine he found me sexy at all!

When Sophie had changed, I was surprised to see that she was full of energy. I had expected her to be tired and jet-lagged. “What would you like to do until your aunt gets here?” I asked. Sophie grinned.

“Can we make cookies?” she asked. “Izzy Sunshine makes great cookies.”

“Sophie, you know I’m not really Izzy Sunshine don’t you?”

She rolled her eyes a little. “But you can make cookies,” she said.

“Well yes.” She raised her eyebrows as if to say “there you go then”.

I laughed. Sophie was cute and adorable but it was a little disconcerting that she seemed to know these things about me. My heart flipped. Max knew all these little things about me! It seemed as if for all the time I’d been fighting my attraction to him, mainly because he acted like a jerk, he had paid attention to me without my even knowing it. His words echoed in my head, “You’re not going anywhere now I’ve got you.” And he did have me. Just one kiss under the mistletoe and I’d been hooked.

The phone rang as I was sliding the cookies into the oven. Sophie answered. We’d had great fun together. Sophie loved to talk about her dad and I had learned a great many things about Max. Things that showed me just how much he loved his little girl. And it was obvious Sophie missed him.

“Hi, Aunt Michelle.” Sophie’s voice rang out from the sitting room. There was a pause and she said, ”Yes, Izzy’s here.” Another pause. “Yes Izzy. She works with Dad.” Then, “Yes, she looks exactly like her.” She listened for a bit and then Sophie giggled. “Okay, I’ll tell her.”

I walked into the room just as Sophie ended the call. Her dark blue eyes were twinkling when she looked up at me. “You can stay with me right?” I blinked at her.

“You should have let me talk to your aunt,” I said.

She looked a little guilty but said hurriedly, “She had to go. My cousin’s not well and she can’t leave her. I told her you could stay until Dad gets back. You can, right?” My heart flipped again. Staying meant seeing Max. And I really wanted to see Max. I needed to apologize but I was also scared.

“I can stay,” I said. There was no way I could leave Sophie alone.
