Chapter Six
December 18, Evening
While Sophie changed and had a quick shower I had time to read some of Maxâs book. I could see why he was the head of the creative department. I pictured him regaling a younger Sophie with these stories. Izzy Sunshine was a sort of cross between Mary Poppins and the coolest babysitter you could imagine. In the stories she took Sophie on the craziest adventures while babysitting but always managed to get her back home to her parents in one piece and on time. It was weird thinking that I was the inspiration for this character because if that was how Max saw me I couldnât imagine he found me sexy at all!
When Sophie had changed, I was surprised to see that she was full of energy. I had expected her to be tired and jet-lagged. âWhat would you like to do until your aunt gets here?â I asked. Sophie grinned.
âCan we make cookies?â she asked. âIzzy Sunshine makes great cookies.â
âSophie, you know Iâm not really Izzy Sunshine donât you?â
She rolled her eyes a little. âBut you can make cookies,â she said.
âWell yes.â She raised her eyebrows as if to say âthere you go thenâ.
I laughed. Sophie was cute and adorable but it was a little disconcerting that she seemed to know these things about me. My heart flipped. Max knew all these little things about me! It seemed as if for all the time Iâd been fighting my attraction to him, mainly because he acted like a jerk, he had paid attention to me without my even knowing it. His words echoed in my head, âYouâre not going anywhere now Iâve got you.â And he did have me. Just one kiss under the mistletoe and Iâd been hooked.
The phone rang as I was sliding the cookies into the oven. Sophie answered. Weâd had great fun together. Sophie loved to talk about her dad and I had learned a great many things about Max. Things that showed me just how much he loved his little girl. And it was obvious Sophie missed him.
âHi, Aunt Michelle.â Sophieâs voice rang out from the sitting room. There was a pause and she said, âYes, Izzyâs here.â Another pause. âYes Izzy. She works with Dad.â Then, âYes, she looks exactly like her.â She listened for a bit and then Sophie giggled. âOkay, Iâll tell her.â
I walked into the room just as Sophie ended the call. Her dark blue eyes were twinkling when she looked up at me. âYou can stay with me right?â I blinked at her.
âYou should have let me talk to your aunt,â I said.
She looked a little guilty but said hurriedly, âShe had to go. My cousinâs not well and she canât leave her. I told her you could stay until Dad gets back. You can, right?â My heart flipped again. Staying meant seeing Max. And I really wanted to see Max. I needed to apologize but I was also scared.
âI can stay,â I said. There was no way I could leave Sophie alone.
